Atticus's behavior in court is intriguing. Harper Lee went to greatlengths to describe the way he speaks and acts. Examine the way hetreats the members of the court and compare him Judge Taylor andGilmer.
Atticus tries to be proper in a way in the court room. he is like being all held up in a way. the judge i believe is in favor of Atticus. he lets him talk and kinda rule the floor from my view
yeah scott.. i agree with that and when he asks a question the witness or whoever has to always think about what they are going to say before they say it..
He treats The Ewells in a firm voice, and made sure they where listening to him, along with Tom Robison but in a somewhat different tone because he is defending Tom Robinson and want to show that he treats everyone the same
Atticus is proving to the court that Mr. Ewell could have beat up his own daughter, so the court doesn't automatically say Tom is the only one who beat up Mayella Ewell.
I agree with bernie; atticus is nice and respectful to everyone, and it doesn't matter to him what color their skin is, and this is probably a good way to be when you are a lawyer!
Atticus treats everyone like they are equal and they give them every right that they should normally recieve, and maybe even more. He acts just like he does in real life. It seems that the judge respects Atticus more than Gilmer and it seems that Mr. Gilmer goes after the same subject when Atticus tries to give evidence to the situation.
Atticus is the man of the time. He is wise, kind, accepting, and polite. A mesh of the older values of a gentleman and the increasingly popular more down to earth and accepting opinion of perfection of that time.
Although the Ewells are white trash people, Atticus doesn't yell at them or make fun of them in the court. He tries to ask them questions about their side of what happened that night.Atticus always makes sure that he knows all sides of a story.
Out of the two lawyers, Atticus is the only one that is treating all of the witnesses with kindness. Mr. Gilmer doesn't treat them equally and is especially rude to Tom Robinson. Atticus is being a good lawyer because he realizes that he doesn't have treat people like dirt to prove them guilty.
I must admit that Atticus is a very cleaver man. He asks questions that many people think are irrelavent, but they actually unlock many doors in solving the case.
All men are created equal is a load of baloney demonhunter respects atticus and his ideals although no men are created equal and demonhunter don't care about color demonhunter means some are poor some are rich some are strong some are weak when you actually consider it no men are considered equal also 3rd person rocks
Zack makes a good point. Atticus treats everyone equally and with respect. He acts the same in the court room as he does in real life. Atticus treats blacks the same and he treats his kids the same. All with respect!
Atticus is the writers perception of perfection and she wrote this book to show the importance of equality. That is why he is like he is. He is a nigh perfectly neutral person.
well i agree with chuck that he could have made fun of her bt he was really showing respect to her and that she didn't evn know it cause she has never had this respect before.
i agree with you zach, aten, and football 89. atticus doesn't judge the color of you skin but he judges your attitude twards life or how you treat him, even though ewell treats him like dirt, atticus is the better man and treats him the way he wants to be treated.
I agree with jess. Atticus is being a good lawyer because he knows he can treat them the same and prove them guilty. Mr.Gilmer is not a very good one becuase he is not treating them the same.
In the view of Mayela she is scared of Atticus because she thought he was offending her by calling her Miss Mayela and mam. I think she was offended because she was never treated with respect.
I think that Atticus is nice to black people and he respects them. Mr.Gilmer is completely the opposite. He hates black people he doesn't want Tom Robison to win th trial
I agree with stephanie, and I think that many people don't understand what atticus's tactics are, but in the end they help prove who is guilty, even though Tom was still pronounced guilty.
The key to remember with a great book is that the writers personality and opinion are reflected through the characters. This means that the characters will not act quite like real people.
it's very hard t follow this disscusion with peple posting these new comments so i agree wit who ever think's Atticus porves the court that there is a possibility of Mr. Ewell beating up Mayella
Harper Lee did all the description to prove that there's nothing false or hypacritical (is that how you spell it) about Atticus also to make the scene more interesting. Gilmerseems to be the general average, everyday lawyer a liar, a fake, they do anything to win the case. The judge simply tries to get the case done and over with.

Atticus is really nice to the black people, but Mr. Gilmer is disrespectful to the blacks!

I agree with bernie; atticus is nice and respectful to everyone, and it doesn't matter to him what color their skin is, and this is probably a good way to be when you are a lawyer!

It doesnt really matter wat ur skin color is in atticus's eyes and thats why he makes a great lawyer

Atticus is very respectful to every one regardless of their color or race. In this way he puts himself above the others in the court.
huhu hiya
I agree with jess.

I have to agree that Atticus treats everyone with equal respect.
The court wants to prove Tom Robinson guilty just because he is black.
In the view of Mayela she is scared of Atticus because she thought he was offending her by calling her Miss Mayela and mam. I think she was offended because she was never treated with respect.

I agree with Jess because Atticus is very calm!
most of the people in the court are dow right mean to the blacks and think that they r all bad just because they black
i totally love this isanely fantastic
I think that Judge Taylor is kind of laid back because he Know that Atticus knows what he is doing.
I so agree with tycee about judge taylor!
for sure!
I think that judge taylor does kinda go easy on Atticus.

Great discussion! Let's wrap this up.
